Nesta quinta-feira (15), é comemorado o Dia Mundial do Hipopótamo (Hippopotamus amphibius). Para celebrar a data, os profissionais do Parque Zoológico Municipal “Quinzinho de Barros” presentearam o casal da espécie Yuri e Yara, que têm, aproximadamente, 50 anos, com um petisco que adoram: um “pedacinho” de melancia.
Administrado pela Prefeitura de Sorocaba, por meio da Secretaria de Meio Ambiente, Proteção e Bem-Estar Animal (Sema), o “Quinzinho de Barros” é considerado um dos mais completos zoos da América Latina e classificado pelo Ibama na categoria A, que é a mais elevada. Além do lazer proporcionado ao público, o parque desempenha um importante trabalho de conservação, pesquisa, bem-estar animal e educação ambiental, que são as cinco funções de um zoológico moderno.
Esses presentes, oferecidos com muito carinho pelos profissionais do Zoo, são chamados de enriquecimento ambiental, que nada mais é do que uma ferramenta utilizada para estimular os comportamentos naturais dos animais. São itens adicionados aos recintos que despertam a curiosidade, a busca por alimentos, estimulam maiores períodos de atividade, oferecem estímulos aos órgãos do sentido, entre outros benefícios às espécies. Eles ocorrem de forma rotineira no Zoológico Municipal e contribuem para manter altos níveis de qualidade de vida aos animais.
Os hipopótamos Yuri e Yara residem no Parque Zoológico Municipal desde 1977. Além desse e de outros enriquecimentos, eles passam por sessões de condicionamento operante, permitindo a escovação de seus dentes, evitando assim, o acúmulo de resíduos de sua alimentação.
Considerado um dos maiores mamíferos do mundo, originários do continente africano, os hipopótamos podem pesar mais de quatro toneladas e encontram-se em risco de extinção por conta da caça predatória, que visa obter, principalmente, o marfim de seus dentes, e que resulta também da destruição de seu habitat.
O “Quinzinho de Barros” está localizado na Rua Theodoro Kaisel, 883, na Vila Hortência, e é aberto de terça a domingo, das 9h às 17h, sendo que a bilheteria funciona até as 16h.
